This program will provide eighteen high school biology teachers with a window into current research in microbiology and disease, and will enable each teacher to develop a meaningful classroom lesson that incorporates current technology. In addition, teachers will work in small groups to draft classroom animations that will be rendered by professional animators.
The program’s first week will consist of presentations by Harvard faculty members who conduct research in areas relevant to microbiology and disease, several laboratory activities, and instruction in multimedia software. During the second week, teachers will receive further software instruction where necessary but will focus on developing individual curriculum projects and working collaboratively to design classroom animations.
This program will be held on Monday through Friday, during the two-week period from July 7 through July 18, 2008. Each day will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end by 3:30 p.m. Participants are required to attend each day of the program in its entirety. Coffee and snacks will be provided in the mornings and lunch will be provided each afternoon. Transportation to and from the program is not provided.
The program is FREE and is funded by MCB-Harvard and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
Each teacher will be awarded 60 PDPs for his or her participation in this program.

Applications must be filled out by high school biology teachers who teach grades 9-12 or are current science/biology curriculum directors for those grades. Applicants who have been teaching for 3 or more years are usually preferred. A two-page essay and current resume are required. Teachers from public, private, parochial, or charter schools in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Connecticut or Maine are welcome.
