Each fall, Life Sciences-HHMI Outreach provides high school teachers the opportunity to attend faculty lectures and activities organized around a single topic. The program takes place after school on five Wednesdays starting in October and ending in early December. Each afternoon includes one or more hour lectures, often incorporates a short laboratory, curriculum activity, tour or demonstration, and concludes with dinner. In fall 2002, Outreach offered "Embryology and Development," in 2003, "The Biology of Cancer," in 2004, "Immunology and Infectious Disease, in 2005, "Neuroscience," in 2006, "Evolution,” in 2007,"Stem Cells and Regeneration," and in 2008, “Microbes and Disease.” The topic for fall 2009 will be "Physiology and Morphology".
Approximately 70 high school biology teachers from Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Massachusetts participate in the fall program. Applications are available online every August and due in early September.
